Q: Can UHMWPE be used for abrasive wear protection (sandblasting)?
Require: A metal nozzle for cement mortar delivery needs to be protected against abrasion. Will a UHMWPE liner protect the nozzle from wear? Or should boron carbide be considered instead?
A: UHMWPE cannot be used for the specified purpose – rapid wear will occur. Few materials can match ceramics in terms of wear resistance.
Polyceramoplast composites are effective against adhesion/freezing and chemo-abrasive wear in mining equipment, where it is economically impractical to cover large areas with expensive ceramics and where the service life of ceramics would be excessive.
Q:The above response mentioned milling or waterjet cutting. Is a manual milling machine or a wood electric planer suitable for chamfering?
A: Chamfering with hand tools is possible. The machining accuracy in this case depends on the operator's skill.
Q:How feasible is laser cutting of UHMWPE sheets of different thicknesses? What recommendations can you give for laser cutting?
A: Laser cutting is not used for UHMWPE: the laser fuses the edges, the material loses its properties in the cutting zone, and yellowing occurs. Milling or waterjet cutting is recommended.
Q:What is the UV resistance?
A: On its own, without additives, UHMWPE is resistant to UV radiation and thermal oxidation (unlike HDPE/LDPE). With the addition of stabilizers, the resistance increases to a level that lasts for several decades.
Q:Procedure for determining the product warranty period (regulations)?
A: As a rule, we provide a warranty that the material complies with the specifications in the TU (Technical Specifications) – including wear resistance, tensile strength, impact toughness, etc. – this can be regarded as the regulation and the main warranty aspect.
In individual cases, we provide a warranty for the operation of linings or products in specific units/mechanisms (e.g., turnkey buckets) – for up to 1 year. The decision is made based on a completed questionnaire.
